In this workshop participants will learn efficient ways of plate making at the wheel and workbench. Nuances of this fraught form will be discussed in detail.
Skill level: Beginner plus to intermediate. Previous experience necessary. You should be able to center minimum 1.5 lb of clay.
If you don't have your own tools, a basic set will be provided for the workshop.
If you're a member of our studio you can use your own bag of clay, and fire works in your Student/Member allotment.
If you're not a member of the studio you'll need to bring clay with you, or you may purchase a bag from us. You are welcome to take whatever you make with you, please bring your own bat to throw on or you may purchase one from us.
Depending on which clay you choose a bag will cost $20-$50.

Beginner SHORTIE: This Course is 4 weeks. Get a taste for clay, and see if you'd like to continue! This is also a great option if you've already taken the Beginner Course, and need to work on technique a little while longer before committing to a Beginner Plus Course. You may take this Course up to 3x before enrolling in Beginner+
Beginner Class: Beginners will learn the ancient art of wheel throwing on the Potter's Wheel. Basic skills are established, including wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing. Focus is centered on beautiful and thoughtful making. How can you efficiently and effortlessly throw pottery? You will learn in this class, with only 7 other peers to ensure one on one instruction and expedite the learning curve. 7 Weeks of Throwing.
Beginner 1.5 SHORTIE: 3 weeks. This option is for those who maybe haven't thrown in a while or took a 4 Week Beginner Wheel Course, and need to work on technique a little more before committing to a Beginner Plus Course.
Beginner Plus SHORTIE: You've taken at least one 6-8 week session within the past couple months, and you know how to throw a 1lb cylinder confidently. Usually students will take 1-2 Beginner Courses before moving onto a BEGINNER PLUS Course.
Intermediate Class: Previous experience required, minimum of 2 x 6 week Courses. You must be able to wedge, center and throw minimum 1lb cylnder. Take your practise to the next level. Focus is centered on beautiful and thoughtful making. How can you efficiently and effortlessly throw pottery? Our small class size will ensure one on one instruction and expediate the learning curve. We move quickly through a lot of content so you must be able to pull up and throw a cylinder confidently.
Handbuilding: Beginner - Intermediate. Come with an open mind to create or come prepared with specific projects the Instructor will guide you through. Different techniques for making will be covered, and support through the development and execution process through completion. You may enroll in the Course back to back if you'd like to continue working on larger projects. 4 weeks, clay & firing included (for larger projects or higher quantities of work you may need to purchase additional clay/firing.) Some tools may be available at the studio on a first come first serve basis, but Students are required to purchase a tool kit from us or bring their own if you want to attend Drop In's during your Course.
Moving forward (except November Handbuilding) Firing and Glazing will not be included in Courses. We strive to make the Studio as accessible as possible, and we are continually trying to lower our costs. As it is our policy to not charge you for things you don't use, we have removed the cost of firing & glazing from the course fee, and you may pay for what you need at the end of the course. Firing fees start at $10, and a Glazing Workshop is $25+tax.
Clay must be purchased from us for the Course (no outside clay is allowed;) information will be provided in the Welcome email, which will be sent a few days before the Class start date. Some tools may be available at the studio on a first come first serve basis, but Students are required to purchase a tool kit from us or bring their own. Course includes firing of one wareboard of work.
If you are 18+, once you take a Course with us, you are able to attend into Drop In's (fee not included in the course) after attending two classes of the Course. If you wish to continue attending Drop In's after the Course is over, a Membership is required. If you are currently enrolled in a Course a Membership is not needed to attend Drop In's. You may view our schedule on Mindbody.
We use Mindbody for booking! If you are going to be away you may remove yourself from your scheduled class, and try to find a Make Up class within your Course dates. We can not guarantee make ups, but the opportunity is there! Information on Make Ups will be sent the week before the Course starts.
Please note classes are non-refundable. We will try our best to re-sell your spot in the class if you contact us at least 10 business days prior to class starting. If we're able to fill the spot, we will refund you, minus a $50 administration fee. You may transfer your spot to a friend of relevant experience at no cost, please email us to inform us of this prior to the Class start.

Extra/larger pieces created may be kept for an additional fee depending on the size of the object to accommodate for the use of glazing materials, the labour of love that goes into finishing the work for you and the space taken in the kiln. Materials and all costs are included, and your items will be glazed and fired for you.
Everything will be set up for you and right at the start time listed the instructor will do a couple of demos before you get a chance to work on your own creation! Focus for the workshop will be on the experience of working clay, and beginning to understand how to feel the medium. Your masterpieces will be ready for pickup about 8 weeks after the workshop. 30 minutes prior to end time participants will work as a team to clean up their stations and tidy the Studio. Team work makes the dream work!

For this Introduction to Hand Building Workshop, you’ll each be given clay to explore, experiment and create with. Throughout the workshop you will be shown techniques you can choose to use to create a personalized work to have finished by the Community Clay team.
With the clay you’re given you may create to your hearts content, and keep up to 2 projects totalling 1lb of clay. Extra/larger pieces created may be kept for an additional fee depending on the size of the object to accommodate for the use of glazing materials, the labour of love that goes into finishing the work for you and the space taken in the kiln. Materials and all costs are included, and your items will be glazed and fired for you.
HOLIDAY WORKSHOP- each participant will get to keep 2-4 ornaments per person depending on size. Extra/larger pieces created may be kept for an additional fee depending on the size of the object to accommodate for the use of glazing materials, the labour of love that goes into finishing the work for you and the space taken in the kiln.

The workshop is great for those who have a challenging schedule but want to try ceramics, or those with prior experience who want to work on a specific skill. The Workshop is one evening, 3 hours in length including arrival and clean up.
